In the collision between a large sailing ship of the Mexican Navy and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York during a sailing event, two people died on Saturday evening. At least nineteen were injured, two of which were serious. That happened when the three masts of the ship broke. The bridge is not seriously damaged, Reuters reports.

Videos placed online can be seen that the ship, the Cuauhtemoc, sails on the East River under the iconic bridge, where the masts collide and break down one by one. The Brooklyn Bridge connects the Brooklyn and Manhattan districts.

“At present, 19 of the 277 people on board have suffered injuries,” said Mayor Eric Adams of New York during a press conference. “Two of them are still in critical condition. Unfortunately, two more have died of their injuries.” According to the authorities, all injured people fell on the sailing ship.

Many people can be seen on the videos, dressed in white navy uniforms. On the quay at the foot of the bridge, near the South Street Seaport in New York, you can see that bystanders run away from the approaching ship.

The suspension bridge, a popular tourist attraction, was completed in 1883.
