The accident happened around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday. The two 15-year-old cyclists were on their way to school when they were suddenly hit by a passenger car at the intersection of Orchideestraat, Pijkstraat and Voordestraat. The pair suffered serious head and leg injuries.

The emergency services immediately arrived on the scene. The two were taken to Sint-Lucas in life-threatening condition. In the meantime, the danger has passed. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was shocked after the accident. The intersection was closed for a long time due to the collision. “Around 12 o’clock, the traffic expert came to investigate the circumstances,” said Dirk De Sutter, spokesman for the Ghent police. The intersection was reopened around 1 p.m.
