Turkish musician Onur Şener has died after an attack by visitors to his own concert. As the broadcaster “CNN Türk” reported, Şener had not previously responded to a music request from the audience. He was then attacked and died in hospital from his injuries.

The performance took place in a bar in the capital Ankara. Şener didn’t fulfill the music wish because he didn’t know the song. A resulting dispute escalated into a brawl in which the singer was injured by a glass bottle in the neck. Three men from a group of five are suspected of having attacked the singer with the bottle. Two of them accuse a third party, who denies the crime.

The 45-year-old musician took part in the Turkish version of “The Voice” (“Ses Türkiye”) nine years ago. His biggest hit was the ballad Sel Suyu (2015). He leaves behind a minor daughter.

State officials among the alleged perpetrators

Turkish rock musician Haluk Levent wrote, according to the news site “turkishminute.com” on Twitter that among the accused were two officials from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and an engineer from the state-owned aerospace company Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). As a result, other celebrities also drew attention to the act.

Actress Sevinç Erbulak wrote that she was certain that the criminals would not be punished or, at most, would receive light prison sentences. Critics accuse Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of having established a system in which state representatives enjoy de facto impunity even for serious crimes.
