Turkey lost its first World Cup match against Australia against expectations. The Turks lost 2-0 in Vancouver, Canada.
Under the leadership of the great star Arda Güler (Real Madrid), Turkey had a lot of the ball, but hardly created any big opportunities. In the 27th minute, Nestory Irankunda scored to make it 1-0 for Australia from a quick counter-attack, and Connor Metcalfe made the decisive 2-0 fifteen minutes before the end with a shot from distance. In group D, the United States leads after the first round thanks to a 4-1 victory over Paraguay.
Turkey last played a World Cup in 2002. That tournament was held in South Korea and Japan. Against all expectations, Turkey came third. In 2008, the Turks reached the semi-finals of the European Championship, but they did not play any more memorable final tournaments. Turkey’s next match is against Paraguay this Saturday.
Scotland beats Haiti
In group C, Scotland previously narrowly won against Haiti: 1-0. After half an hour, John McGinn scored the only goal of the match: the first Scottish World Cup goal since Craig Burley’s in 1998. It is the second time for the Haitians to participate in a World Cup. Group C is completed by football superpowers Morocco and Brazil, who drew 1-1 on the night from Saturday to Sunday.
