Come in summer
Union Berlin will lose Grischa Prömel to TSG Hoffenheim on a free transfer in the summer. Both clubs announced this on Monday. For the 27-year-old central midfielder, it is a return to his old place of work after training with the Kraichgauers from 2013 to 2015. His contract runs until 2026.
Prömel has appeared in 129 games for the “Iron” so far, in which he was directly involved in 26 goals. With the native of Stuttgart, who came for free from Karlsruher SC in 2017 and celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga with the “Köpenickern”, the Berliners are losing one of their longest-serving professionals.
“Grischa is a player with outstanding running skills and an enormous presence, who can act very flexibly in midfield and also has a great understanding of the game. In addition to his defensive qualities and his impressive mentality, he also has a special tactical instinct and is also a frequent goal threat from his position. All in all, an extraordinary overall package,” said Hoffenheim’s director of professional football, Alexander Rosen.

Prömel explained that saying goodbye to Union was difficult for him: “Driving to the parking lot at the Alte Försterei in the morning and meeting the first employees who greet you with a smile on their face is something I enjoy every day and I will miss that very much. I’ve experienced a lot with Union – the club, the fans and the employees – in recent years. We rose together, made our dream of the Bundesliga come true and then qualified for Europe. This special time left a deep impression on me and will remain in my memory forever.”
Prömel will be the next high-profile departure from Union Berlin
For the Berliners, the farewell to Prömel in the summer means the next heavy loss of a top performer. In the past winter transfer period, the club had to say goodbye to top preparer Max Kruse (33) and central defender Marvin Friedrich (26).
