Trump announced the decision in a message on his Truth Social platform. In it, he also reiterated his support for Nasry Asfura, the candidate of the conservative National Party in the presidential elections in Honduras this weekend and a party colleague of Hernández. Trump warned that the US will no longer send financial aid to the Central American country if Asfura does not win the elections.

The 67-year-old Asfura, a construction magnate and former mayor of the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa, will face a left-wing lawyer and a right-wing TV presenter on Sunday.
Hernández served as president from 2014 to 2022 and was extradited to the US a few weeks after the end of his term.
