Washington (dpa-AFX)- US President Donald Trump has reacted to questions about a phone call with China’s state and party leader XI Jinping. “I spoke to him,” the Republican replied to the corresponding question of a journalist. However, he left open whether he referred to the time after January 17th.

A few days before his swearing -in, Trump had said to have spoken to XI. Now he emphasized that he was maintaining a “great relationship” with his Chinese counterpart. A reporter said: “But to make it clear: You have spoken to him with him since January 17th?” Trump replied: “I don’t want to say that, but I spoke to him. I’m talking a lot to him.”

The two largest economies in the world have a trade conflict as in Trump’s first term. The rhetoric recently worsened very much. The Chinese Foreign Office spokesman Lin Jian in Beijing declared that if the United States wanted to wage a customs war, a trade war or another war, China would go with it until the end./GEI/DP/ngu
