Donald Trump has fired Pam Bondi as Attorney General of the United States.

Fox News reporter Peter Doocy announced Thursday that Bondi would vacate her post as attorney general, take on another role in the government, and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche would replace her on an acting basis. According to Doocy, Trump told him the news personally on the phone.

Trump himself has not yet publicly confirmed the news.

Bondi under pressure

The firing follows reports that Bondi had been on the hit list for some time and that Trump had long been unhappy with her – particularly over her handling of the Epstein files and her reluctance to position the Justice Department against the president’s political enemies. Semafor was the first media outlet to report on Thursday that Trump had informed Bondi that her time at the helm of the Justice Department was coming to an end.

Trump’s Cabinet had survived the first year of his second term intact, but his patience with some of his most prominent followers appears to be waning. Last month, the president fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and, according to a report in the Guardian on Thursday, he asked Cabinet members whether he should also get rid of Secret Service Director Tulsi Gabbard. The government doesn’t seem to be particularly happy with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. either.

It is unclear what role Bondi will take on in the government in the future. Doocy said Trump still thinks Bondi is a “great person” who has done a “good job.”

This is a breaking news story that is continually updated.
