T.RUE MOTHERS
Gender: Melodrama ✦✦✦
Directed by Naomi Kawase. With Hiromi Nagasaku, Arata Iura, Aju Makita, Reo Sato, Iroko Nakajima

That of families that are formed beyond blood ties is a theme that runs through Japanese society (also in Hirokazu Kore’eda’s cinema): Kawase, who has wrapped up his own personal and artistic history around parenthood, here she deals with adoption and its consequences for the “real mothers” involved.

Satoko and Kiyokazu, a middle-class couple, want a child but cannot have one. Hikari becomes pregnant at 14 and, rejected by her family, can only give her child up for adoption.

Kawase shows the two sides of the coin, over time, through flashbacks which, from the moment of custody of the child, lead to the hypothesis of a new coexistence.

Destinies crossed as in a melò and documentary style as in the 2006 short film in which Kawase retraced his own history of abandonment and adoption.
