Trudeau comes with counter -duties and calls on Canadians to buy Canadian products

From Tuesday, Canada sets taxes of 25 percent on around 155 billion Canadian dollars (around 103 billion euros) in imports from the United States, in retaliation for the import taxes that US President Donald Trump announced against neighboring countries Canada and Mexico on Saturday. Trump announced on Saturday import duties of 25 percent on all goods from Canada, as well as from Mexico. A rate of 10 percent will apply to Canadian energy products. Canada is the most important foreign supplier of oil to the US. The American taxes will start on Tuesday.

“We don’t want this, we didn’t ask for this, but we will stand up for Canada,” said Trudeau. He expressed bewilderment among many Canadians about Trump’s attack on the Noorderburen, a traditional ally and economic partner with whom the US has been carrying free trade since the late 1980s.

According to Trump, Canada and Mexico do not do enough to prevent the influx of illegal migrants and drugs, in particular Fentanyl. Trudeau pointed out that Trumps import duties on Canadian goods will harm American buyers. They can raise inflation in the US. Canada supplied 418 billion dollars of goods to the US in 2023. Trudeau encouraged Canadians to buy Canadian products.
