Triathlon: Anne Haug: Is the second Roth victory followed by a second Hawaii triumph?

Status: 04.07.2022 12:02 p.m

After the Challenge Roth 2022, before the Ironman Hawaii is over for the top triathlon athletes. After the victory in Franconia, Anne Haug is one of the favorites for the World Cup triathlon in October.

Of course she already knew how nice it felt to win in Roth. After all, Anne Haug from Upper Franconia experienced this feeling of happiness amidst the frenetically cheering spectators in the Middle Franconian triathlon stronghold for the second time after 2021.

And yet this feeling of victory at home was something special for Haug: “The spectators really chase you up the Solarer Berg, it’s brutal. If you’re from the area, you think they’re all just screaming for you ‘ she said on the BR mic. It was similarly loud at the finish, Franken cheered for Haug when she surrounded by balloon children ran to the goal.

Victory at Challenge Roth as a good omen?

your victory, where she didn’t let a bee sting stop her, could be a good omen. After all, 2022 could be a year of the second time for the Bayreuth native. Because in addition to the success in Roth, the 39-year-old is also aiming for victory number two at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii on October 8, after the triumph in 2019.

Unlike in Roth, the field there should of course be even more high-class, but with a lead of almost nine minutes over second-placed Fenella Langridge, Haug has already indicated that she is in brilliant form this year – and that despite the bee sting in Roth as well the cool water conditions and a failed first change prevented an even faster time.

“Somehow, there was nothing more today,” said Haug. A very solid conclusion after a win. And it gets even warmer in Hawaii than in the water of the Main-Danube Canal.

Haug on triathlon training in Lanzarote

The top athletes still have three months to prepare for their big goal for the season. Jan Frodeno, who, like Haug, is trained by Dan Lorang, subordinates everything to the World Cup. In Roth, at the first race after partially tearing his right Achilles tendon, he dropped out early, so as not to endanger Hawaii.

Haug will soon – and as usual – prepare for Lanzarote, as she revealed to the trade journal “Triathlon Magazin” after the race in Roth. She then gets the training plans from her long-time coach Lorang over the distance with online training plans – the Luxembourger also handles it that way with Frodeno.

Haug and Lorang have been working together since their studies

“I’m not saying it’s the best way to train someone, but it’s the only possible way for me,” said Lorang on Sunday on BR.

Haug and Lorang have known each other since studying at the Technical University of Munich, where they started working together at a triathlon club and have been working together for more than 18 years. And also this year, as Haug’s commanding victory in Roth has already shown, the form seems to be right.
