Farmers in Southwest Drenthe want the rural culture to be recognized as an intangible heritage, just like carbide shooting, the Nijmegen Four Days Marches and the Gabber culture. “Our heirs and farmlands are of great social value.”

Farmers in the area together prepared an agricultural vision. They explain that the countryside not only revolves around farmyards, but also about chain, barn parties, Easter fires and the tractor light. “Less visible, but just as important, is the rural culture that originates on the farmyard,” the document can be read.

“We find that very important for cohesion and the coherence in the countryside,” responds Maarten Rosink, director at LTO Noord Zuidwest-Drenthe. By giving this status he hopes that they will be saved. “It provides coherence in the outlying area here and that is important for liveability. It gives Sjeu to life in the outlying area.”
