Transfer check: This is how Werder Bremen could play with Naby Keita & Co

season preview

Transfermarkt takes a look at the 18 Bundesliga clubs and their summer activities. who left who is new And what could the starting XI look like in the new season? Let’s continue with Werder Bremen.

Arrivals and departures from Werder Bremen in the summer of 2023

If Werder fans had been shown the current Green-Whites squad three months ago, they would probably have been more than happy with it. With Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch, the congenial duo is still under contract in attack and no other top performers have been given up. In addition, the club has a transfer plus of around 5 million euros and was able to win one of the most surprising newcomers in the league in Naby Keïta.

Nevertheless, the euphoria on the Weser is limited. The end of the first round of the DFB Cup brought back memories of the weak second half of the season, in which, despite a large lead, relegation was only secured on the penultimate day. Keïta was injured on the first few days of the game and there was not a single newcomer in the starting XI in the 2-3 draw at Viktoria Köln. Dawid Kownacki, who arrived on a free transfer from Fortuna Düsseldorf, sat 90 minutes on the bench, as did Senne Lynen, who was signed for €2m from Royale Union Saint Gilloise last week.

Among the departures, Fabio Chiarodia (Gladbach) and Lee Buchanan (Birmingham) are particularly striking. Two players who should actually belong to the future left the club partly because of the low number of appearances last year – a criticism of many supporters of Ole Werner. After all, the two youngsters brought in 3.5 million euros, the sale of Niklas Schmidt (FC Toulouse) flushed a further 2.5 million euros into the cash-strapped Bremen coffers.

The biggest question mark at Werder is still the defensive. 64 goals conceded were only surpassed by three Bundesliga clubs last season. With the exception of Lynen, who is supposed to act as a clearer in front of the defense and is likely to establish himself as a regular in the next few weeks, no personnel changes have been made in defense. In order not to slip into the relegation battle, the North Germans should again be dependent on strong performances by Füllkrug and Ducksch.

Senne Lynen (24) – Union SG – transfer fee: 2 million euros

There could still be movement at Werder in these positions

Since the start of the transfer phase, Werder have been looking for a new left-back to duel with the not undisputed Anthony Jung for the regular place. Many names have been traded, but nothing has been finalized yet. A signing of Fodé Ballo-Touré from AC Milan recently seemed most concrete. Werner also wants a new signing on the right-hand side, but those responsible in Bremen curbed expectations.

Otherwise, the personality of the filling jug should provide excitement until Deadline Day. Although there have been no significant developments in the past few weeks, that could change any day as soon as there is more movement in the international striker carousel. Ilia Gruev was missing from the squad for the cup game, but not, as initially reported, due to an imminent change – a departure is still possible.
