Arrivals and departures from Darmstadt 98 in summer 2023

After SV Darmstadt 98 returned to the Bundesliga, there was no major upheaval. In addition to a handful of supplementary players, the “Lilien” lost two cornerstones in Patric Pfeiffer (23) and Phillip Tietz (26) to future rivals FC Augsburg. The newcomer took good money into his hands for the successors.

As a substitute for Pfeiffer, Christoph Klarer (23) was released from Fortuna Düsseldorf. With a fee of 2 million euros, the Austrian is one of the most expensive newcomers in Darmstadt’s history. As a further alternative for the back three recently favored by coach Torsten Lieberknecht, Matej Maglica (24) was loaned out from VfB Stuttgart, who had previously impressed at FC St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Striker Tietz, who shot Darmstadt 98 with his twelve goals in the direction of the Bundesliga, seems more difficult to replace. The Scot Fraser Hornby (23) came from Stade Reims for 1.8 million euros, but was unable to take part in large parts of the preparation due to injury. Nevertheless, Lieberknecht attested to his new protégé’s many facets: “I really have a very good impression of Fraser.”

Darmstadt 98 also strengthened the central midfield with two up-and-coming and free players who are trying their luck in the Bundesliga for the first time. Fabian Nürnberger (24) came from 1. FC Nürnberg and Andreas Müller (23) from 1. FC Magdeburg.

There could still be movement at Darmstadt 98 in these positions

After the frighteningly poor goal tally in preparation with four games without a goal and the embarrassing 0:3 against fourth division side Homburg in the DFB Cup, Darmstadt 98 is looking for further reinforcements for the offensive. “Of course, all in the knowledge of what opportunities we have as a club,” announced the sporting director Carsten Wehlmann. “We have our eyes and ears on the market – we have always communicated that. We have to make sure that we find someone with our possibilities who fits into the group and has the necessary skills that we are hoping for.”
