Transavia travelers will also pay for a rolling suitcase as hand luggage | Abroad

The Dutch budget airline Transavia will also soon let passengers pay if they take a suitcase with them as hand luggage. The spaces in the cabin are too small and the company could use the extra income, Transavia reports to travelers. Years ago, competitors easyJet and Ryanair started charging extra for a suitcase in the cabin.

From now on, travelers may only take bags or other luggage with them free of charge if they fit under the seat. Larger pieces of hand luggage, up to a maximum weight of 10 kilos, are allowed in the cabin for at least 10 euros each way. But the additional cost can also be higher if more passengers want to take their suitcase with them.

“It has become apparent that the capacity in the luggage bins is often insufficient to process the flow of trolleys in the cabin in a timely and complete manner. Last-minute luggage often has to be collected and then placed in the hold,” Transavia explains the change in conditions. “The change in policy is also necessary because we are struggling with increasingly higher costs, regardless of our fleet renewal. For example, we have to pay more and more for emission allowances and maintenance costs are increasing.”

The new arrangement will come into effect from April 3. Travelers who book a flight before that date do not have to pay extra for a suitcase on board, even if they fly after April 3.

In 2018, Ryanair already put an end to the possibility of taking free suitcases on board. EasyJet followed suit in 2021 and said that measure should also provide more clarity. Flights were allegedly delayed because large pieces of hand luggage ultimately did not fit in the lockers above the seating area, as required.
