Tracy Chapman: Fans share Grammy performance with 1989’s ‘Fast Car’

Tracy Chapman also performed at the 2024 Grammys – along with Luke Combs.

Tracy Chapman’s performance at the 1989 Grammy Awards is being widely shared on the Internet right now. Fans of the musician sought out the original performance of “Fast Car” after Chapman performed the song at the Grammys on Sunday.

“Fast Car”: cover with great success

Originally released in 1988, “Fast Car” recently enjoyed a renaissance thanks to a cover version by Luke Combs. His version achieved double platinum status in the US and won multiple awards at the 2023 Country Music Association Awards. There the musician won awards for the single and song of the year. Chapman had already expressed her support for the cover back then. “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,” she told Billboard. “I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful for the new fans of ‘Fast Car’.”

Tracy Chapman back in focus

Thanks to his nomination in the Best Country Solo Performance category, Luke Combs was also on stage with the cover hit at the 2024 Grammy Awards – and was promptly supported by original artist Tracy Chapman. What’s special about it is that she rarely played the song in front of cameras. Chapman’s public appearances are very rare, and her last own tour ended almost 15 years ago, in 2009. Fans of the musician now honor the appearance with memories of the live performance in 1989. On social media, Chapman is described as an “icon” and “real “Diamond of the Music World”.
