Tourism in Drenthe is growing again to the level of for the Corona Pandemie. People are increasingly going on the road in the province and spend more money than ever. In 2023, for example, a record amount of 1.4 billion euros was tapped.

This is apparent from a biennial study by the Drenthe Recreation Board into tourism. In 2021, during the Coronapandemie, the amount was still around 1 billion euros in income.

The researchers do comment on the record amount. Due to inflation, visitors paid a lot more for overnight stays, fuel and food and drinks than the years before.

Not only the money that has been spent has risen, but the number of people who went out for a day in Drenthe also grew sharply. In 2023 this happened 27.7 million times, while in 2021 that number was still around 22.7 million times.

The number of vacations with overnight stays remained the same: 9.1 million times. When the coronavirus grabbed around it, tourism declined the Drenthe Recreation Board. Due to all the extra visits and expenses, tourism is growing back to the level of reading in the study.

Before 2024 and 2025, the figures are expected to grow even further. There is a problem lurking and that is inflation according to the research. Higher costs could throw a spanner in the works and scare tourists.
