Tottenham’s Conte: “Some mistakes in the past” on transfers – Gvardiol issue?

Lending for million purchases “strange”

In the past winter transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur were among the busiest teams in all of Europe. New additions worth 55.8 million euros were offset by disposals worth 118 million euros. With the exception of Dele Alli (25, free transfer to Everton), they were all only loaned out, but for coach Antonio Conte this was a sign of wrong decisions in previous years.

“Usually you buy players to strengthen your team,” said Conte (quoted via “BBC”) at the press conference ahead of the FA Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion. “But when you borrow them after two or three years, it’s strange. It means maybe you have to look back at what you’ve done and maybe you have to understand that there were some mistakes in the past.”

The 52-year-old is primarily playing on the record purchase of Tanguy Ndombélé (arrived in 2019 for €60m from Olympique Lyon), but also on the transfers of Giovani Lo Celso (2020 for €32m from Real Betis Sevilla) and Bryan Gil (2021 for 25 million euros from Sevilla FC). All three players gave the “Spurs” on loan this winter because they could hardly assert themselves in the Premier League. “We have to be more careful about when we go to market in the future. This is fundamental if we want to strengthen the team, otherwise the quality of the squad will drop,” added Conte.

The Italian found praise for his newcomers Rodrigo Bentancur (24) and Dejan Kulusevski (21) and described the squad as “significantly more complete” than in the first half of the season. However, there was no reinforcement in the central defense, but according to consistent media reports, this should also be followed up in the summer at the latest.

Tottenham Hotspur looking for a central defender: RB Leipzig’s Gvardiol in focus?

According to that “Telegraph” there are currently three young defenders on the list of seventh in the table. In addition to Sven Botman (22) from LOSC Lille, in which a number of clubs have already shown interest this winter, and Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni (22), Josko Gvardiol (20) from RB Leipzig is one of them. The Croatian has impressed since moving to the Bundesliga in the summer and recently increased his market value to a career high of EUR 25 million.

In view of his contract in Leipzig, which is valid until the summer of 2026, it still seems unlikely that the “Red Bulls” will let him go after just one year. There is also skepticism in the TM community for the most part – but user “Borusse91” adds: “Conte already wanted to bring him to Inter Milan, so it is obvious that interest is still there now that Gvardiol has presented itself in a big league. With an exit clause at Upamecano level, it should also be affordable for a PL club like Tottenham, especially if the CL is at the end of the season.”
