Positive discussions with players

For a good year and a half, Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United’s market value has been going almost exclusively uphill. Currently worth 80 million euros, the 26-year-old midfielder is by far the most highly valued Italian footballer – and could be aiming for the third major transfer of his career this summer. According to consistent media reports, Tonali’s agents are in positive discussions with league rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Fabrizio Romano and “The Athletic”, Spurs coach and Tonali compatriot Roberto De Zerbi wants the 32-time international player as a new star in midfield – and as a statement transfer in relation to the ambitions of the almost relegated team. However, the sports portal expects that the transfer negotiations with Newcastle will be significantly more difficult than the talks with Tonali himself. There is no contact between the clubs yet, but this should take place as soon as there are clear signs that the player intends to move.
The most expensive new signing in Tottenham’s history so far is the former Leipzig player Xavi Simons (22), who cost 65 million euros a year ago. Newcastle, which will not play internationally in 2026/27, has already sold a top performer in Anthony Gordon (25, for 80 million euros to FC Barcelona). By missing out on the European Cup, the Magpies are forced to generate revenue in light of Premier League financial rules. According to the Chronicle, the Gordon sale may not be enough to prepare the squad for international places again. A Tonali sale could at least ensure that youngsters like Lewis Hall (21) and Tino Livramento (23) do not have to come onto the market.
However, it is to be expected that Newcastle will demand 100 million pounds – around 115 million euros – for the eight-man, whose contract is valid until 2028. In addition to Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal FC, who have title ambitions and participation in the Champions League, are also considered interested parties.
