Tottenham Hotspur negotiates termination agreement with Conte – signs point to Mason

Criticism also discussed among professionals

After his recent all-round blow towards the pros of Tottenham Hotspur, the signs are increasingly pointing to a premature separation from coach Antonio Conte and the Premier League club. The English “TimesAccording to the Italian and Spurs are already negotiating the termination of his contract, which was dated until the summer and has an annual fee of 17 million euros. While the search for a well-known successor is said to be running in the background, an interim solution for the remaining ten games seems to be emerging at White Hart Lane with ex-professional Ryan Mason.

The 31-year-old, who came from the Lilywhites’ coaching staff, had already moved to the sidelines of London between April and June 2021 after the separation from José Mourinho. Back then, Mason had four wins in seven games, lost three times and ended the season in seventh place. Mason, who had to end his active career prematurely in 2018 after suffering a skull fracture in a duel, is held in high esteem by those responsible for the club as well as by the players, according to media reports. If a short-term agreement is reached with Conte, the current assistant could be in charge of the away game in Everton after the international break.

Tottenham: Tuchel, Enrique, Pochettino and Glasner on the list

Irrespective of this, Tottenham is exploring other options at the same time. In particular, for well-known coaches without a club such as Thomas Tuchel, Luis Enrique or Mauricio Pochettino, who was already active at White Hart Lane between 2014 and 2019, a commitment from the summer is said to be much more attractive. The latter had recently indicated that he was interested in returning to London. Ange Postecoglou (Celtic), Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton & Hove Albion), Thomas Frank (Brentford), Rúben Amorim (Sporting Lisbon) and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Oliver Glasner are also traded as possible candidates – with the Austrian’s agent, the ” Spurs” according to a report already contacted.

Conte had his displeasure after the 3: 3 against the table 20. Southampton let loose over the weekend. His protégés are “selfish” and “don’t want to help each other.” The club could “change the coach, but the situation will not change. (…) Tottenham’s story is as follows: this owner has been around for 20 years and you’ve never won anything. Why? Is the fault only with the club or with every coach who stays here? I saw the coaches sitting on the bench at Tottenham. You risk destroying the figure of the coach and protecting the other situation at any moment. Until now I’ve tried to hide the situation but not now because I repeat I don’t want to see what I saw today because it’s unacceptable and also unacceptable for the fans,” said the 53-year-old.

Conte sees “only eleven players at Tottenham who play for themselves. Because they are used to it here, they are used to it. You’re not playing for anything important here. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress.” Tottenham are currently fourth in the table, the last place that entitles them to play directly in the Champions League. The “premier class” remains the declared goal. Meanwhile, Conte’s words also sparked debate among the players in the sixth most valuable squad in the league. “We all saw it,” said Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, who is currently on international duty with Denmark. It was a “very honest and very open press conference”.

Höjbjerg on Conte’s future: “Fortunately not the one who judges”

Asked about the reasons for Conte’s outburst, the midfielder replied: “Because he’s not satisfied. You don’t do that when you’ve reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and are in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. That’s because we unfortunately didn’t get the results we wanted as a team and as a club. (…) I understand that if you want to be successful as a team, you need eleven men who are committed to a project and a culture. (…) The coach wasn’t happy, and I take that with me. You do what you can to please him. What I know about myself is that I am an honest player. I’m a player who always gives 100 percent for the team,” said Höjbjerg, who, when asked about the Italian’s future, added: “Fortunately, I’m not the one to judge.”
