Tottenham coach Conte with harsh criticism of players, owners & club culture

After a draw at Southampton FC

After Tottenham Hotspur’s 3: 3 in the 20th table. FC Southampton, in which the Londoners gambled away a 3-1 lead within a quarter of an hour, coach Antonio Conte has expressed harsh criticism of his professionals. The 53-year-old also denounced the club culture. His charges are “selfish” and “don’t want to help each other” and Tottenham “can change coaches but the situation won’t change,” said an angry Conte (quoted via “BBC“).

“Tottenham’s story is this: 20 years of this owner and you’ve never won anything. Why?” the Italian continued. Spurs have won a single trophy since the ownership group chaired by Daniel Levy took over the club in 2001 – the 2008 League Cup.

“Is the fault only with the club or with every coach who stays here?” Conte asked, fleshing out his thoughts. “I saw the coaches who were on the bench at Tottenham. You risk destroying the figure of the coach and protecting the other situation at any moment. Until now I’ve tried to hide the situation but not now because I repeat I don’t want to see what I saw today because it’s unacceptable and also unacceptable for the fans.”

Since April 2001, the Lilywhites have had 11 different head coaches, including three since the departure of Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, who led the club to the Champions League final before being sacked six months later. So far, Conte has averaged a point average of 1.79 in 75 games.

Tottenham coach Conte takes professionals to task: “See selfish players”

The ‘Spurs’ have been eliminated from all cup competitions this season: Sheffield United knocked them out of the FA Cup before AC Milan ended their Champions League hopes – and Conte stressed it was time that the club and the players start taking responsibility. “Not just the club, the coach and the staff. The players have to be involved in this situation because it’s time to change this situation if Tottenham want to change.” And: “If they want to continue like this, they can change coaches, many coaches, but the situation will change not change. Believe me.”

With a squad value of €680.3m, Tottenham are the sixth most valuable team in the Premier League. But Conte sees many individualists. “From my experience I can tell you that if you want to be competitive, if you want to fight, you have to improve that aspect. And that aspect, I can tell you, is very, very low right now. I only see 11 players playing for themselves.” When asked why this is the case at Tottenham, Conte explained: “Because they’re used to it here, they’re used to it. You’re not playing for anything important here. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress.”

The draw left Spurs fourth in the league but a win over Southampton would have given Manchester United a chance to slip into third place, but during his scathing press conference Conte said they are lucky if they have one Get a place in the Champions League with the current form.

“We have ten games left and some people think we can fight. Fight for what with that spirit, that attitude, that commitment? What? For seventh, eighth or tenth place? We are eleven players going onto the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players who don’t want to help each other and who don’t put their hearts into it. I’m not used to this situation. I’m really upset and everyone has to take responsibility.” The Italian’s contract expires at the end of the season.
