The son of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán has been arrested. The police operation was accompanied by shootings, blockades and an attempt to take control of a nearby airport.
It concerns Ovidio Guzmán, who was arrested today in a police operation in Culiacan, a city on the west coast of Mexico. After that, according to local media, there were shootings in the area. Roads are also said to be blocked and armed groups are trying to take control of the airport.
It has been restless in Culiacan since Wednesday evening. The drug cartel of the same name has also established itself in the northern state of Sinaloa. Ovidio has been given an important position within that organization after his father’s arrest. El Chapo is currently serving a life sentence in the United States for murder, drug smuggling and money laundering.
According to Mexican media, there is a lot of shooting at the airport. An Aeromexico plane was hit by a bullet, but no employees or passengers were injured, the airline said. In any case, the airport will be closed for the rest of the day. The media say that there is also shooting at a prison in the city and that there may be an escape attempt.
Images of gunmen in a hospital are circulating on social media, presumably because people with gunshot wounds need treatment. National Guardsmen were also injured. The police advise residents of Culiacan to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed. Disturbances are also reported in surrounding places. Schools and public buildings went under lock and key.
Fear of carnage
Ovidio Guzmán was also detained for a short time in 2019. Then he was quickly released at the request of President Manuel Lopez Obrador, because otherwise a massacre threatened. He feared that there would be many casualties among the civilian population during firefights between cartel henchmen and security forces. The United States had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Ovidio’s arrest.
