It was an almost perfect example of efficiency: leaders Liverpool FC landed a remarkable 2-0 (2: 0) away win in the top game of the Premier League at Manchester City and thus impressively underlined the title ambitions of the “Reds“. The hosts had given up twice as many shots on goal (16) as Liverpool. Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai met for the team of coach Arne Slot.

“This is something special”Salah said at the Sky Sports broadcaster about the away win at the defending champion. “Especially when you are in the title race -an incredible feeling. Hopefully we will stay calm, because sometimes the pressure really puts us. We need another title.”

For the team of coach Pep Guardiola, it was the next bankruptcy in a set of setbacks highly and unusually pronounced. The “Skyblueswho, as fourth in the table with one game, currently 20 points behind Liverpool lies, it is all about participating in the Champions League.

Guardiola tried to gain something positive to the defeat and looked ahead. “If you lose, then you have to lose as we do today”he said. “I saw many things that show me that this club with the players we have has a great future.”

Manchester too harmless

Both teams started the top game, even if they Citizia – who had to play Haaland without the injured attacker Erling – had a little more possession of the ball. The mutual respect was naturally great.

The longer the game lasted, the clearer the superiority of the hosts became. But neither Omar Marmoush nor his offensive colleague Phil Foden were able to capitalize on their chances of shooting.

Salah lets the stadium fall silent

But what a real top team is doing was shown in minute 14: A perfectly rehearsed, flat corners over Alexis Mac Allister and Szoboszlai converted Mohamed Salah – unsustainably deflected by Nathan Aké – from 13 meters to the surprising 1-0 lead for the guests.

Then it became quiet in the city stadium. The shock over the deficit was not only deep among the fans. The Guardiola team tried to play out opportunities, but the Liverpool defensive looked compact and almost impenetrable. And the Manchester players lacked ideas. Marmoush once brought the ball over the Reds goal line (30th), but he was previously offside.

Liverpool again ice -cold

And how ice -cold Liverpool can act, the team of coach Slot showed in minute 37. After a long ball on Salah, he put the ball on Szoboszlai in the penalty area, who carefully considered the ball and pushed into the goal 2-0 from 13 meters.

The hosts ran again and again – but it remained: the necessary assertiveness was missing in order to assert themselves decisively.

Manchester is missing playful means

After the break, the picture continued. Manchester attacked, but ran again and again. Liverpool managed the game, tried to take pace out of the game, which was very common. And the “Reds” showed their almost perfect switching game.

Again and again Salah and Co. ran towards the opposing goal, but they either failed due to goalkeeper Ederson or on tight offside positions.

Manchester still played out in the second half no promising goal opportunities. The Guardiola team played at eye level, but when it came to putting the opposing defensive into trouble, the playful means were missing. So the title candidate’s away win was completely okay.
