Top athletes Lycurgus and Donar receive a subsidy to get school youth in Groningen moving

Top athletes from basketball club Donar and volleyball club Lycurgus will receive 15,000 euros from the province of Groningen to make children enthusiastic about exercising more.

The subsidy is part of the ‘Breedtesport naar de Top’ plan. The aim is for the sports clubs to organize activities and develop training materials for 35 primary schools and sports associations in the 2022-2023 season, which is already underway.

Donar basketball players and Lycurgus volleyball players will support a 5th and 6th grade basketball and volleyball tournament. They coach the teams on tournament day and all participants get to attend a Donar or Lycurgus home game. In preparation for the tournament, participating schools receive guidance from neighborhood sports coaches and the sports consultant from Huis voor de Sport Groningen.

In addition, it is the intention that the top athletes help the local basketball and volleyball associations to keep children who are enthusiastic for the sport longer. Professional trainers guide the sports clubs with training material and help to set up the organization better.

FC Groningen already has a program to get as many Groningen residents as possible in motion (‘FC Groningen in de Maatschappij’).
