The Public Prosecution Service (OM) in Curaçao has demanded up to 28 years in prison for four men for the murder of military police officer Toon Brood from Roosendaal. The 49-year-old victim was shot dead in his home on the island on the night of May 31.

Amon F. (20) was sentenced to 28 years. Aivano M. (23), who confessed to killing Brood, would spend twenty years in prison and Claverzjion N. (26) eighteen years. Five years have been demanded against Glennson Z. (27). A high sentence was demanded against F. because his role was also taken into account in a murder in September 2023.

The public prosecutor called Toon Brood ‘a connector who had the best interests of the island in mind’. He asked for a severe punishment in retaliation and also to protect society. The judge will make a ruling on January 29

Brood was shot dead during a home invasion. His wife Sonja and their now 12-year-old son were also in the house on Reigerweg at the time, but they were unharmed. They also attended the hearing. Brood’s widow took advantage of that opportunity by wiping the floor with the suspects. “What happened that evening is a big nightmare,” she said when she was allowed to speak by the judge.

“This is a big nightmare, the perpetrators have walked over corpses.”

“They literally walked over dead bodies, because all three of them saw that the shot hit my husband. They heard Toon groaning and fighting for his life.” Yet they ‘just’ continued to trash the entire house. “My son was frozen in bed with fear. Still, they lifted the mattress to see if there was anything underneath,” the site Curaçao.nu quotes her as saying.

Brood’s widow found what the family had to experience all the more painful because her husband had just left for Curaçao to make the island safer: “We came to the island for my husband’s work and to guard the border. But these men crossed all boundaries into our home.”

According to her, her son still suffers from it every night. “He doesn’t dare to sleep, he suffers from nightmares. So do I.” The boy left the courtroom after an hour because the morning was too emotional for him.

The woman feels she is still fighting for her life. She sat on her knees in her home in Curaçao waiting for a second shot. The first shot killed her husband, but the second shot never came.

“I still think there could be a second shot.”

“But my body still thinks that a shot could come. Even in the Netherlands, where I should be safe, my body still thinks that.” Finally, she says: “These boys are unscrupulous and justice will prevail. With help, I hope that things will turn out well for my son and me.”

The two now live in the Netherlands again. Many members of the military police in uniform and friends and acquaintances of the Brood family had traveled from our country.

All four suspects often looked at the ground during the hearing, to the irritation of the judge who asked them to look at her. The suspects emphasized that it was not the intention for it to turn out this way. However, three of the four had a firearm with them on the evening in question. The fourth suspect acted as a driver. The four different lawyers think the sentencing requirements are far too high. They emphasized that the suspects have tried to blame each other.
