“Too cheap at this level”

FC Bayern clearly loses the top game in Leverkusen. After the game, coach Thomas Tuchel spoke out and mercilessly addressed his team’s mistakes.

The away game at Bayer Leverkusen ended with a bitter setback for FC Bayern. The German record champions lost 3-0 (0-1) to the league leaders and are now a whopping five points behind the “Werkself”.

After the game, coach Thomas Tuchel answered questions from the broadcasting TV channel Sky. Despite the clear defeat, the 50-year-old saw his team’s initial good performance, but then they lost their way. “We dominated the game very early on without becoming dangerous and then basically let the momentum shift a bit through our own mistakes,” he analyzed.

Tuchel on the 0-1: “That’s not possible”

Then Tuchel made it clear: “The 1-0 we conceded is something you normally can’t concede in a five-man chain. It’s not possible for a ball between the goalkeeper and the five-man chain to go past five players.”

Tuchel had already surprised with his line-up before the game. The Munich team normally play with a four-man defense. This time the coach decided on five defenders. At 0-1, none of them looked at their best. But the other Bayern stars weren’t paying attention either.

“A clear lapse in concentration,” said Tuchel, obviously referring to Leroy Sané, who didn’t really put pressure on the throw-in. But the coach reiterated that the national player was not the only one to blame for the goal. “That’s not possible. That’s not possible. We can’t completely lose sight of someone at the back,” complained Tuchel. “Everyone is just sleeping.”

“We’ll do a damn thing now”

Tuchel did not want to accept criticism of the switch to a five-man chain and therefore of himself. “No, because the decision has been carefully considered and spent many hours thinking about it. Then that’s the plan, we take responsibility for it,” he said. “We don’t know what would have happened if we had played differently. But I would do it that way again.”

The defeat was also too great for Tuchel. “It’s a 3-0, it didn’t feel like a 3-0. At the start of the second half we get a goal with the first one-two that is too cheap at this level. One hundred percent.” He attested to Leverkusen’s “perfect evaluation of their chances.”

Despite being five points behind Xabi Alonso’s team, he does not yet see the championship as decided. “We will now do a damn thing to throw in the towel on whatever matchday.”
