The coach and uncle of Rafal Nadal participated in an event in Rome organized by the Angelini Academy Foundation, where he was asked which tennis player he would choose to coach today, given the chance. Toni Nadal responded, bluntly and without hesitation Jannik Sinner. “I see in him discipline, good manners and a mentality reminiscent of that of the greatest. I like working with people who accept the truth and don’t create problems. Currently many coaches are forced to tell young people what they want to hear and I will never do that,” said Nadal. If you think about it, it’s no surprise that someone like Rafa’s uncle prefers the mentality of a Sinner rather than that of an Alcaraz, a tennis player decidedly more inclined to do his own thing than the blue (Juan Carlos Ferrero knows something about this).

Nadal then spoke about his vision of what a coach should be. “Today many coaches have to tell the players what they want to hear. I never did it. With Rafael I spoke sincerely, even when it was hard. The result is not as important as the path to get there.” In support of this view, Nadal recalled an episode preceding a Monte Carlo final against Roger Federer: “Before a Monte Carlo final against Federer, Rafael asked me how I saw the match. I told him the truth: that Roger had a better forehand, a better backhand, a better serve… He stopped me. But I replied: ‘If you want, I can deceive you.’ But the judgment of the field will not deceive us”. The truth is the basis of improvement”.
