Tom Morello casts doubt on Rage Against the Machine’s future

2022 would be the year that Rage Against The Machine would celebrate their second reunion with an extensive world tour. Although that should actually happen in 2020 and then 2021: The reunion of the crossover legends from California with their frontman Zack de la Rocha was announced in 2019.

Then came the corona pandemic and the tour was postponed twice. Finally the time had come. In July 2022, the “Public Service Announcement Tour” started. However, at the second concert of the North American slide, on July 11 in Chicago, de la Rocha tore his Achilles tendon. He played the 17 following concerts in the USA and Canada while sitting. But the hardships of a trip around the world would have limited the healing process too much. 38 shows have been canceled, including one concert in Germany, and replacement dates have not yet been announced.

In an interview published on Tuesday (March 28), guitarist Tom Morello has cast doubt on whether such new dates will even exist.

Strange interview

When asked about the band’s future and their plans for the tour, he responded evasively and cryptically. There was no clear line within the group, neither a “yes” nor a “no”. As an outsider, he doesn’t know much about himself and is currently busy making his own music. Now is above all a “phase of healing”. Andy Greene, who conducted the interview for ROLLING STONE, Morello finally countered the growing incredulity with the following comparison:

“Rage Against the Machine is like the ring in Lord of the Rings. They drive people crazy, they drive journalists crazy, they drive people in the music industry crazy. Everyone wants this stuff and they go crazy doing it.”

He also said, “It’s unlike any situation you’ve ever interviewed. There is a completely different dynamic. All I can say is that I love all the guys and the music is complete. There is nothing that comes close to this honor and the time we have had together.”

Now it depends on Zack de la Rocha

So for the time being, any debates about the future of RATM appear to be postponed until de la Rocha’s physical fitness allows him to make plans again. It is also clear that information that directly affects the formation should only be made public through its official channels.

Morello, meanwhile, plans to play three festivals in Italy, Chile and Brazil in June, supported by his band Freedom Fighters Orchestra.
