‘Tom Egbers will no longer return to TV, quietly retired’

According to the weekly magazine Privé, Tom Egbers will no longer return to television. According to the magazine, it seems that a silent retirement is being made for the now 65-year-old TV star.

What a painful retreat for Tom Egbers… He had to make way for an incident from the distant past at NOS Sport, where they try to clean up when it comes to transgressive behaviour. And while many people think his TV departure has been exaggerated, it still looks like he’s not returning.

Early retirement

According to the Privé, it is as clear as a lump: we will no longer see Tom on television. “Tom himself remained belligerent after he was accused of far-reaching transgressive behavior with a young woman. But his employer, the NOS, seems to be aiming for his extended retirement.”

Tom will reach retirement age on January 18, 2025, in a year and a half, says Privé. “The fact is that Egbers cannot be seen on TV at the moment. The fact that the recordings for Toms Wales have also been canceled can be seen as a sign that his return is not very high on the agenda of his NOS bosses.”

AOW side door

A TV comeback from Tom will not happen in any case before the investigation into the sick working atmosphere at NOS Sport has been completed, according to the magazine. And that can take a very long time, according to the investigation into The Voice.

De Privé: “For the NOS, Egbers’ imminent retirement may come as a gift from heaven, but the presenter himself will be horrified by such a farewell through the AOW side door. Egbers, who hardly goes outside now that he is on non-active, wants rehabilitation.”

What does Jan think?

Jan Slagter, the boss of Omroep MAX, understands that all too well. He says in the latest MAX Magazine that he hopes for Tom’s TV comeback. “Something seems to have been going on fifteen years ago and it is suddenly no longer allowed to appear on the tube. I absolutely disagree with that.”

He continues: “We currently live in a society in which people are no longer allowed to make mistakes, then it is immediately gone. The hardening, the cancel culture, I’m really worried about that. I hope that Matthijs and Tom return to the media, wherever they are.”

Matthews back

Matthijs van Nieuwkerk must therefore also return, says Jan. And good friend Özcan Akyol fully agrees, he writes in the latest VARA guide. “There is currently a lot of junk on television and it would be nice if Matthijs van Nieuwkerk returned to the picture tube. There are criminals who are punished less harshly.”

He continues: “In a country where we value second chances, this man is being punished disproportionately in the public eye – not even by a judge. So maybe we can all act normal for a while.”
