What if a boy from the future suddenly ends up in your backyard? In Arcothe new French animated film from producer Natalie Portman, time travel, friendship and hope come together in a story that touches young and old. The film will be shown in cinemas in Zoetermeer from December 3, and this is one that animation fans won’t want to miss! Hidde de Vries, Head of films and series at Cinekid talks about it.

In search of life, connection and a bit of humanity, Arco takes you on an adventure that makes you think. “I even had to shed a tear,” says Hidde. “If a film manages to touch me, surprise me and has a good story, I know it’s going well.” Check out where you can get it from December 3 can view.

A meeting that changes everything

In the year 2075, ten-year-old Iris sees a mysterious boy in a rainbow-colored suit fall from the sky. His name is Arco. He comes from the year 2932, a distant future where time travel is a real thing. While Iris keeps him hidden from the outside world, she does everything she can to help her new friend return to his own time.

What follows is an exciting, moving adventure that shows how powerful friendship can be. “It is a film with a laugh and a tear, but hope prevails,” says Hidde. “Many films about climate change feel heavy, but this film actually shows a future in which a solution may be found. That offers so much hope, especially for children who sometimes worry about it.”

Famous names, great animation

The film was written and directed by Ugo Bienvenu and – yes – produced by Natalie Portman. In the English version you hear big names such as Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Mark Ruffalo and Portman himself. Arco premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes the film scores no less than 90 percent positive reviews – that says enough.

For young and old

Whether it’s a day with the kids or a quiet evening out: Arco was created for everyone who loves animation with a heart. And according to Hidde, that works precisely because the film has so many layers. “Everything you expect happens slightly differently. You are always fooled a little bit. That makes it original and not cliché at all,” he explains. “Just like Pixar and Disney films, there is a deeper layer for adults, while children enjoy the adventure. That combination is so strong.”
