The Rostock Seawolves have stopped their negative series of three defeats in a row in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). The Mecklenburgers won against the Skyliners Frankfurt on Saturday evening with 82:77 (38:24).
However, head coach Przemyslaw Frasunkiewicz’s team had to worry about their sixth win of the season until the final seconds, because Frankfurt, who had previously been strong away from home, clearly improved after the break. But thanks to Rostock’s best thrower TJ Crockett (25 points), who decided the game with free throws in the final phase, the Seawolves kept the points at home.
Rostock takes advantage of Frankfurt’s threesome lull
The first section was characterized by runs by both teams. The Rostock team initially countered Frankfurt’s quick 4-0 lead with an 18-0 run (7th). Thanks to a strong defense, they took the pace away from the Hessians in this phase and won almost every rebound, at least on defense. Since the Skyliners dominated again in the last three minutes and went on a 10-0 run, they came close again. The Seawolves won the first quarter by six points (20:14) after a last-second tip-in from Owen Klassen.
The Frasunkiewicz team also won the second section – and thanks to an interim 15:2 run, they were even plus eight (18:10). In particular, Klassen and Deandre Lansdowne, who had six points and four assists each by halftime, left their mark on the game. The Rostock team also benefited from the fact that the guests only hit their first three-pointer with the final siren (out of twelve attempts). The score was 38:24.
Skyliners equalize…
Because the Skyliners increased their three-point rate at least slightly in the third quarter – center Jacob Knauf scored three times alone – they gradually reduced Rostock’s lead to five points (59:54). It was a trend that initially continued in the final period, with Till Pape equalizing for Frankfurt five minutes before the end for the first time since the opening phase (65:65).
…but the Seawolves win thanks to Crockett
The game now became a game of nerves – and the hosts won, also because Crockett turned up the heat again. First he put his team back in the lead, then he put the lid on the game when the Skyliners sent him to the free throw line with fouls in the final seconds.
