The move to the USA is paying off for Timo Werner. The German scores again and quickly earns a new nickname.
Timo Werner decided to move to North America at the beginning of the year. The long-time national player was no longer needed at RB Leipzig, but he is now a top performer at MLS club San Jose Earthquakes. The Californians are currently the best team in the league – and Werner contributes with goals and assists week after week.
On the night from Saturday to Sunday German time, the Earthquakes won 3-2 in St. Louis. Werner scored twice, turning the game in his team’s favor. The attacker has now scored in three games in a row. “It wasn’t our best game, but it was an important win. Let’s move on,” said the German after the success in St. Louis.
The commentators on the MLS games sound even more euphoric. “Holy schnitzel,” shouted the reporter when Werner scored the 3-2 winner in St. Louis. And when the German also scored against Austin a few days earlier, the commentator even gave him a nickname: “Tectonic talisman”. It’s a reference to the name of his club – Earthquake means earthquake in German.

After eight games for his new club, Werner has four goals and four assists. For RB Leipzig he didn’t play a direct goal in three games in the first half of the season.
The Earthquakes are continuing a series thanks to the in-form Werner. They have won nine of the first ten MLS games this season and currently have six wins in a row. This means that the Californians not only lead the Western Conference, but also the league’s overall ranking. The next game is now in the US Open Cup: On the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, Werner and Co. will host Minnesota United with former Bayern star James Rodríguez.
