Tilburg once again has a Safe Space at Stadhuisplein during the carnival. The space where carnival goers can go if they feel unsafe proved to be a success last year, which means that a refuge area has again been created in the center this year.
Eva van de Sande from Tilburg is one of the initiators of a safe place. She had a bad experience during 11/11 in 2024. She missed a place to relax and someone to tell your story to. “I later discovered that I wasn’t the only one who has ever felt threatened and lacked a safe place.”
Eva heard positive feedback about the Safe Space afterwards. “Not only did the users appreciate the place, but people liked the idea that there was such a space if it was needed.”
Overstimulated
The municipality of Tilburg once again supports Eva’s wish and will also ensure that there is a Safe Space in Tilburg during carnival in 2026. “Last year nine people used it,” says a spokesperson for the municipality. “That may not sound like much, but for a first year it is not bad. If dozens of people had used it, that would also have been worrying.”
The Safe Space is not only intended for carnival revelers who want to catch their breath or need support. It is also for carnival goers who want to escape the hustle and bustle.
Listening ear
There are experts present who offer a listening ear and, if desired, can help with follow-up steps, such as referral to Victim Support, Blauwe Maan, Feniks Emancipation Expertise Center or the police.
A safe space has recently been set up at Stratumseind in Eindhoven, where people who go out can also go during Carnival. The chairman of Royal Horeca Netherlands Eindhoven department, Ruud Bakker, said this earlier.
The Safe Space during carnival in Tilburg is available from Friday afternoon until half past twelve on Tuesday evening. On Fridays and Saturdays the place is open until half past two in the morning.
