I have no idea what tiger milk tastes like. But it sounds as if it could ring out from a few boom boxes on sun-drenched parking lots in the coming days. Not entirely unlikely, since Tigermilch’s debut album GELABER will be released on April 8th.
As it so often starts, there are initially two guys from Cologne who want to make music – Ben Werchahlad (vocals and everything that has keys) and Philipp “PHYLLO” Georg Schmidt (drums, also producer) founded a music project in 2018 , from which tiger milk should eventually develop. Bassist and prospective psychotherapist Eric Wieben will join in 2019.
At the beginning of their journey, the band places are still quite unstable – on March 13, 2020 they will probably play one of the last concerts before the lockdown at the Halllmackenreuther in Cologne. The first restrictions are decided three days later. Aside from that, this is also their first appearance with the current and now permanent line-up; Tamim Ebadie helps out as a guitarist at the concert by learning all the pieces within a few days. It seems to have paid off.
During the pandemic, the band manages both the usual procrastination and being productive. They play a benefit concert in front of a bar in Cologne, with small amps in the park and on open stages throughout Germany. Now their debut album GELABER is out. They record it completely on their own in the shared room. The music producer friend Jonas Hipper, who worked with 2LADE among others, is mastering the album. The combination of merging genres from jazz to indie as well as the refusal of classic pop structures makes the record as complex as it is enjoyable to enjoy. With which the band could tap into a broad mass of audience without sounding washed-out or simple-minded.
Tigermilch gave an exclusive interview to MUSIKEXPRESS on the release of their first record. In it, the band tells how the album came about, explains if there are ray guns at their concerts and questions whether it should be called “snooze for an hour and a half” or “ignore three alarm clocks”. There is at least a teaser of where the journey could lead – a stopover at PHYLLO’s parents’ birthday party is obligatory. We keep our fingers crossed for the upcoming adventure. Because so far it has been nice in the Auenland – they could already get the millions of clicks for the track VERSPRECHEN there – but Tigermilch wants to get out on the stages.
