THW Kiel has found its way back to success in the handball Bundesliga. After the draw against Rhein-Neckar Löwen and the derby defeat in Flensburg, the record champions celebrated a convincing victory in the home game against MT Melsungen on Saturday.
With the 31:29 (17:12) win, the Kiel team achieved their sixth win of the season. The Faroese Elias Ellefsen a Skipagötu was the best THW thrower with eight goals, Andreas Wolff distinguished himself with nine saves. “After the last two games in the league with only one point, it was extremely important here today,” said Kiel’s Rune Dahmke. “We could have made it more clear at the back, but in the end the two points count.”
With the second European League game on Tuesday (6.45 p.m.) against Ostrow and the league duel in Gummersbach on Thursday (7 p.m.), the Schleswig-Holsteiners have a tight program ahead of them.
Strong THW performance in the first half
The Kiel team delivered a strong first half. From safe cover and with a well-rounded Wolff behind him, who was no longer affected by his injury from the European League game against Montpellier HB, the “Zebras” dominated the action.
Melsungen didn’t really get going, hardly scored any goals and repeatedly invited the Kiel team to score with a lack of concentration. The last action of the first half was significant when the guests lost the ball and Lukas Zerbe scored into the empty MT goal to give the team a 17:12 half-time lead.
Seven meter festival in Kiel
It was already half the battle for the Schleswig-Holsteiners, who didn’t show any weakness in the second half. With the necessary aggressiveness and concentration, the THW did not let Melsungen come into the game again and reliably maintained its four or five goal lead. In a veritable seven-meter festival, Zerbe’s goal from the line to make it 31:27 two minutes before the end was the preliminary decision.
