A three-year-old boy was hit by a train in Bremen and fatally injured.

The child was reported missing by his family in the morning, the federal police said on Thursday.

The boy was walking alone a few hundred meters from the family home and ran off a gravel path onto the track. There the S-Bahn of the Nordwestbahn drove at about 120 kilometers per hour. The train driver only saw the child a few meters ahead.

He braked, but was unable to prevent the accident.

The train came to a standstill on a high embankment. Therefore, the approximately 100 passengers could not get off, but had to wait more than two hours until the journey to Bremen main station was possible.
