Weinheim (dpa) – Athletics Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo continues to win in the World Cup and European Championship year. As expected, the 28-year-old won the long jump competition in Weinheim on Saturday and thus recorded her third victory in eight days.

“Of course it’s important for the head that I’m in such good shape so early in the season. I showed that in Birmingham, I can build on that,” said Mihambo. She won in Birmingham a week ago with 7.09 meters, in Dessau 6.49 meters was enough for her afterwards.

With her Birmingham width, she leads the year’s best list ahead of Monae’ Nichols (USA), who has 6.97 meters. Third is the Swede Khaddi Sagnia, who won the Diamond League meeting in Eugene on Saturday evening with 6.95 meters.

As in Dessau, Mihambo also had a shorter distance of 6.66 meters in Weinheim. “For the external conditions, it was okay, the sun only showed up briefly in the first round. Of course, the fact that it rained a bit wasn’t exactly conducive,” said Germany’s Sportswoman of the Year. “In addition, this was the third competition in a week – you can tell.” Mihambo won ahead of Maryse Luzolo (Königstein/6.54 meters) and Merle Homeier (Göttingen/6.38).
