Nonot only pollution, stress and bad habits linked to a hasty and superficial beauty routine, even the food abuse – protagonists of the holidays – they can see each other on the skin. The first resolution of the coming year will be to take care of it, starting from the inside. We’ll talk about it with the professor Giulio Gualdi, dermatologist surgeon, specialist in epithelial pathologies and consultant at Villa Paradiso, a facility on Lake Garda dedicated to preventive medicine.
Three good intentions for skin care
Professor, how does our skin show its suffering, especially after periods of indispensable excesses?
«The skin is the communication organ that allows us to relate to the outside world, therefore visible, a sort of sentinel that warns us quite quickly in case of possible pathologies also resulting from a poor diet. It becomes the immediate mirror of everything that happens in our organism. When we have gods food deficits, for example, like iron or copper, we suffer alterations to our hair or nails. The opposite is true if we eat badly.”
«There’s a lot of talk about dry skin due to lack of proteins… Of course, because in nutrition proteins constitute the basic element of our organism, naturally also plant proteins, as the introduction of elements antioxidants, vitamins, polyphenols they allow us to defend and keep our epithelial tissue healthy. Furthermore, we must not forget that every month our skin changes, which is why it deserves constant monitoring.”
But how do we notice that our skin changes?
Somehow the skin speaks to us and makes itself felt through itching or burning, or even flaking. In terms of nutrition, however, pay attention to what is defined as the “sugar face” that is, an excessive intake of sugars, components that generally produce inflammation, both at the level of metabolism and at the level of the skin, which becomes shinier and redder.
Another theme linked to the holiday period: exposure to the sun, especially at high altitudes…
This is a big problem, because our skin undergoes a progressive adaptation to the ability to tan, especially during the summer months, but during the winter the approach to sun is decidedly more aggressive, with a quantity of light that our epidermis is not ready to receive. So imagine how much violence is exercised with inevitable damage, sometimes very serious.
How to help her? «We must choose a delicate cleansing with acid pH products and possibly with some oily bases that integrate with the epidermal typology. Also, never forget to use emollient and hydrating creams which are very important and which often solve problems such as allergies, irritations, inflammatory diseases. So, always have sun protection, in the mountains and in the city. The truth is that the skin demands small daily attentions that benefit it and our wellbeing in general”!
