From indie pioneers to rock icons: “Musikexpress” presents Tocotronics “Golden Years” live. Eight exclusive open-air shows between Lake Constance and Vienna.
When young people start playing the guitar today, they often orientate themselves on songs by Tocotronic. The Hamburg band has been one of the defining formations of German-speaking indie rock since the 1990s and has built up an extensive, stylistically varied body of work over three decades.
From reduced guitar rock to an orchestrated sound language
Tocotronic was founded in 1993 by Dirk von Lowtzow (vocals, guitar), Jan Müller (bass) and Arne Zank (drums). The debut album DIGITAL IST BESSER was released in 1995 and combined reduced guitar rock with striking lines of lyrics that quickly established themselves as slogans. With the following albums AFTER THE LOST TIME and WE COME TO COMPLAINT US, the band managed to step out of the club scene and into a larger context. ES IST IST ALER, BUT (1997) marked the first opening of the sound with additional instruments such as harmonica and strings.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, music became more complex and darker. KOOK (1999) took influences from harder rock styles, while the self-titled “White Album” (2002) was more orchestrated and combined realism with surreal motifs. Since 2005, Rick McPhail has been an integral part of the band as the second guitarist, expanding the sound with dense guitar pads and feedback structures.
The Berlin trilogy and later thematic shifts
With PURE VERNUNFT DARF NEVER WIN (2005), a phase developed in which Tocotronic increasingly integrated political, social and philosophical questions into their texts. PURE VERNUNFT… is considered a central reference point in his later work and initiated a series of publications that are retrospectively referred to as the Berlin trilogy: PURE VERNUNFT…, KAPITULATION (2007) and SCHALL & WAHN (2010).
The “red album” (2015) marked a further simplification of the sound, while DIE INENDLICHKEIT (2018) incorporated autobiographical elements more heavily. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the song “Hoffnung” was released in 2020, which addressed experiences of isolation and isolation. The album NIEDER KRIEG (2021) followed on from this and dealt with themes such as vulnerability, healing and community.
With GOLDEN YEARS (2025) the band continued this examination of personal and social questions. The album deals with motifs such as aging, time, memory and expectations of the future, without abandoning the political and reflective demands of earlier works. Tocotronic remains recognizable, but at the same time a continuous shift in musical means can be noticed – from reduced indie rock to more complex arrangements.
