The safety measures that the municipality of Bergen op Zoom took early this month in the vicinity of Bakkerij Asya on Kamperfoeliestraat will be extended until 23 February. At this bakery, three explosives exploded in two weeks. The police assume that there is intent.

These are the safety measures that are now being extended by the municipality:

  • Camera surveillance is extended
  • The building remains closed with gates
  • The current prohibition of gathering remains in force and is maintained in the event of order disturbances
  • There will be extra supervision of boas and agents

Sunday, December 29, it was hit at the bakery for the first time. Then a fireworks bomb went off. The explosion caused fire and several windows died.

During the New Year’s Eve heavy fireworks were again set off and it was restless in the neighborhood. On this, fences were put in front of the bakery and people were not allowed to stay unnecessary at the bakery until 2 January, there was a prohibition of gathering.

Yet it went wrong again on January 11 and there was another explosion. The prohibition of gathering was then redesigned and extra measures were taken. Cameras were then placed, among other things.

‘We understand the worries very well’
On 11 January, deputy mayor Letty Demmers said he understood that residents are worried about their safety. “Alderman Joost Pals and I can understand that very well,” she said.

The owner of the Turkish bakery estimates the damage to his case, after the third attack in a short time, on more than a ton. No suspects have yet been arrested for the three explosions in less than two weeks.

Following the unrest in the neighborhood, a meeting will take place on Wednesday evening from half past eight to nine in the Huis van de Wijk on Piusplein in Bergen op Zoom.
