This week in 2010: Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupts, giant ash cloud paralyzes air traffic

A volcano that erupts could seriously disrupt international air traffic. The world could see that in 2010. On March 20 of that year – last Sunday 12 years ago – the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull made itself heard. At first, the volcano’s emissions remained modest, but a few weeks later tens of thousands of people were trapped because European airspace had to be largely closed by the kilometer-high ash cloud.
