This week in 1998: Marc Dutroux, public enemy number 1, escapes from the Neufchâteau courthouse

Exactly 24 years ago, our country was completely turned upside down. Public enemy number 1, Marc Dutroux, outsmarted two gendarmes on April 23, 1998 and escaped from the Neufchâteau courthouse. Dutroux (now 65) was arrested in August 1996 for the kidnapping of Laetitia Delhez. It later emerged that he was also behind the murder of his accomplice Bernard Weinstein, and the kidnapping and rape of at least six girls. Only two of them survived the horror.
