It was already very hot on Wednesday during the day during the day and the next night it doesn’t really want to cool down. So a real slab night and that means sweating and pasting in bed. Falling asleep is sometimes difficult for people without air conditioning. Hopefully you can start a new day with the tips below.
Do you know that? That you keep tossing under your duvet cover in a desperate attempt to fall asleep? That the kicking away of the duvet cover also does not help and the open window and the fan also offer no cooling. And you just don’t have money for an air conditioner.
Maybe you should try to sleep in a cooler place in the house than your bedroom. For example in the hallway. Or sleep on the ground. What can also help:
- Sleep naked.
- Keep a cold jug with you.
- Place wet cloths on your body to cool down.
- Take a lukewarm shower before bed.
And beware, because whatever you do and no matter how loom you are: don’t take an afternoon nap. If you do this, you fall asleep even more difficult in the evening.
Bedding
Also take a closer look at your bedding and bed. It is advisable not to sleep under your comforter, but only under the cover or under a sheet. Use bedding of a non-synthetic substance.
If you have a box spring with a topper of memory foam, then remove it and lie down on the mattress. “At least, if the mattress is not also filled with memory foam,” emphasizes Willem Reichardt from Bleekloods.nl in Breda. Synthetic mattresses and toppers work as sponges. They suck on moisture and let it difficult.
Freeze your sheets
Take precautions. When you have them, put all the awnings and shutters down during the day. Also close all windows and doors and close the curtains. Only open everything in the evening when it has cooled. But if it stays hot, this will not help.
What you may not think about that quickly:
- Add wet socks. When your feet or hands are cold, the rest of your body automatically cools down. To prevent a wet mattress you can put a towel under your feet.
- Freeze your sheets and remove them just before bedtime.
- Before bedtime, keep your wrists under cold water for a few minutes.
- Place bottles filled with cold water in the freezer. Then place the frozen bottles for the fan in your bedroom. Don’t forget to place the bottles in a container so that the melt water is collected!
- And perhaps the most important tip: undergone the warmth and don’t worry. In the Netherlands, warm periods never last long.
These tips are based on advice that Sleep therapist Ingrid Verbeek from Center for Sleep Medicine Kempenhaeghe in Heeze and Geriatric Huub Maas of the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg gave a few years ago. Even then, Brabant sighed under the heat.
