Savolain talcum powder is Finland’s eighteenth name-protected product.

Around 3,760 designations have been protected in the European Union so far. Proagria Itä-Suomi ry applied for a protected geographical indication for Savo’s talcum powder.
The protection of the names is based on the reputation of Savolainen talckunna as a traditional Savoland grain product, the special features of which are its dark color and coarse texture.
The geographical area of the product includes the provinces of Pohjois Savo and Etelä Savo.
Savolainen talcuna or Savolainen talcuna is a grain product made from boiled and oven-roasted grains into a coarse powder, the main raw material of which is barley or a mixture of barley and oats. It differs from other talcum powders in that it is darker in color and coarsely ground.
Talcuna is characterized by a coarse texture, roasted grain smell, taste and brown color. Thanks to the multi-step manufacturing process, it has a good shelf life.

The goal of name protection systems is to protect products from misuse of the established name and from more serious counterfeits. In addition, it increases the awareness of the products and facilitates their marketing. For the consumer, protection is a guarantee that the product’s origin, raw materials and manufacturing method are known.
