This is why the escalator on the Mandela Bridge is regularly broken

It often happens at the weekend: the escalator at the Nelson Mandela Bridge does not work. Very annoying if you want to cross the A12 with your bike to drive to Rokkeveen on the one hand or Driemanspolder on the other. We wondered: why are the escalators regularly defective?

In the event of a faulty escalator, you can alternatively take the lift at the Mandela Bridge or carry your bicycle up the escalator. But actually you are not waiting for that. A spokesperson for the municipality says that in 2021 37 malfunction reports of stationary escalators were received at the reporting desk.

The next working day

The reports are from citizens and from automatic reports in the event of a malfunction of the escalators. You can pass this on to the municipality on telephone number 14 079. The malfunction will normally be dealt with on the next working day. In case of a report in the morning, the technician will fix the fault the same day. It may take a little longer on weekends. Usually the report is picked up after one or two days. That is why the escalator stops for longer on weekends.

Screws between the steps

The escalators can come to a standstill due to vandalism (e.g. pressing the emergency stop). Screws can also fall between steps. The escalator contains a number of protections that stop the escalator for safety.
