A few days after Christoph Dabrowski was fired, Rot-Weiss Essen has a new coach. Uwe Koschinat is supposed to save RWE from relegation. t-online introduces the 53-year-old.
Even before the important duel in the relegation battle against direct rivals VfL Osnabrück, Rot-Weiss Essen introduced Uwe Koschinat as their new coach. The 53-year-old from Koblenz has only one task: to prevent the impending fall into the regional league at all costs.
RWE boss Marc-Nicolai Pfeifer hopes for “mentality, honesty and commitment” from his new head coach. Koschinat has earned a reputation as a hard-working, down-to-earth worker, is seen as straightforward and meticulous, but also as a motivator who can passionately drive a team.
And: Uwe Koschinat stands for pure experience. The “Transfermarkt” portal lists 460 games as a coach, plus another 283 games as an active footballer for TuS Koblenz, FV Engers and VfL Wolfsburg. As a coach in the 3rd league alone, the 53-year-old has played 216 games so far – seventh place in the all-time best list.
Uwe Koschinat delivered over a long period of time, especially at Fortuna Cologne and SV Sandhausen. The 53-year-old won the state cup and the Regionalliga West with the Cologne team and established the club in the third division – Fortuna was only relegated again in the season after Koschinat moved to Sandhausen. At the SVS, the Koblenz team managed to stay in the league and then led the team to the best season the club has played to date in the Second Bundesliga.
However, the most recent stages were unfortunate for Uwe Koschinat and his teams. In the spring of 2023, the 53-year-old took over Arminia Bielefeld at the end of a completely chaotic season and was dramatically relegated to the third division in the relegation game against Wehen Wiesbaden.
Uwe Koschinat then took over VfL Osnabrück in autumn 2023 and was allowed to remain as coach there despite relegation to league three. After a weak start to the season, he was finally fired – and is now meeting his old love in his first game as RWE head coach.
