The new edition of the Stepstone salary report was released in January 2025. The data relate to “the gross annual content of full -time positions, including bonuses, commissions, premiums etc.”.

Average content in Germany
In the report, both the median and the average of all salaries are considered. While the median is “exactly in the middle of all gross salaries”, the average can be “extremely high or low values [verzerren]”. The average content is 52,300 euros gross. The median content, on the other hand, is only 45,800 euros. In order to map the data as precisely as possible, the rounded median containers are always specified below.
North and south offer a lot of money
The city state of Hamburg is also another leader of the table in 2025. Around 52,000 euros can be expected here a year. However, if you don’t want to live in the north, you can also go to the south: Baden-Württemberg follows in second place with around 50,250 euros. But Hessen can also raise the same median content, which is why the two neighboring federal states share the space. Bavaria can also keep up in third place in the south. You have to assume only 250 euros less here.
The differences between East and West
While most other federal states rank between 40,000 and 50,000 euros, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt fall below this limit. In Saxony-Anhalt it is around 39,750 euros, but in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania it is a little less with 39,500 euros. This also shows an enormous difference between east and west this year – more than 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Almost 10,000 euros difference can be determined here. In the west it is 46,900 euros on average, in the east (except Berlin) only 39,250 euros. The difference is 16 percent. It is interesting that salary -increasing factors hardly play a role here. Although a manager with personnel responsibility is above the all -German median, it is still better paid in the West than in the east.

City trip
The regional differences in salaries can not only be divided into East and West. The number of cities compared to rural regions also has an enormous impact on the salary. This year the Bavarian capital of Munich has been chosen as a top city: around 58,000 euros can be obtained here, but the cost of living is also very high here. “Even a top content does not necessarily guarantee financial security,” says Stepstone. In contrast, the median content of the Baden-Württemberg city of Korb in the Rems-Murr district with 45,750 euros is almost exactly in the Germany-wide median. The population of the municipality near Stuttgart is just 11,385. It is over a million in Munich.
