The city of Nuremberg converts the shopping mile wide alley with a new concept from which trade, gastronomy and citizens should benefit inside.

The redesign was planned in several phases, the city of Nuremberg said on Thursday. Overall, this process should continue until autumn 2027, “although archaeological finds can interrupt construction work”. The shops should be accessible throughout the renovation work.

The aim is to create new residence zones that also offer shadows to create “active islands with elements for play and movement for all ages” as well as temporarily playable action areas for commercial and trade, which make the wide alley more attractive, according to the message. The street space should also be released more for outdoor catering.

“I am convinced that the wide alley will be a nice place for strolling and shopping in about three years,” said Mayor Christian Vogel. “Before that we have to get through the construction site. But if you have the end result in mind, the work is definitely worthwhile.”

After the renewal of the natural gas pipes and laying a new surface made of granite plaster, new trees are to be planted in early 2026 and then installed benches and wastebasket and a new lighting concept is being implemented.

The costs for the first construction phase between Ludwigsplatz and Färbergasse are around 2.36 million euros.
