Caring for each other is one of the most valuable things you can do; whether at work, in your private life or in an emergency situation. As an emergency response officer you will not only learn how to act professionally in the event of fire or accidents, but you will also become more confident in situations where help is needed. Whether you apply a plaster or assist with resuscitation: every action counts. As Linda’s story shows, every action can make a world of difference.
Learn how to stay calm when things get exciting and how you might one day save someone’s life. Sign up for one emergency response or First aid course or ask your employer about the options.
Self-confident in tense moments
The question ‘Can I do that?’ is one that many novice emergency responders (in-house emergency responders) ask themselves. But it is precisely during an emergency response course that you learn to act with certainty and confidence in such emergency situations. Consider providing first aid, evacuating a building and dealing with various emergency situations. This knowledge goes beyond your workplace. For example, you can also work as a citizen first responder in your own neighborhood, such as resuscitation.
Linda took an emergency response course every year through her work and registered as a citizen first responder in her hometown. “I initially doubted whether I could do it, but the experience I gained during my courses gave me the confidence to act when necessary,” says Linda.

Saving a life in your own neighborhood
On a Saturday afternoon, Linda received a call: 800 meters from her house there was someone who needed to be resuscitated. “I didn’t hesitate for a moment and immediately took the car. When I walked in and saw the woman, I knew I had to act. I never thought I would need the techniques from my course so quickly.”
Fortunately, she was not alone. In these types of emergency calls, several people are called upon to provide assistance together. Thanks to her emergency response knowledge, Linda was able to help with resuscitation. It later turned out that the woman had survived. “Knowing that I have helped give someone a second chance at life is my greatest reward. I have learned that action really matters, even when things get tense.”
What do you learn during an emergency response course?
An emergency response course gives you practical tools that are widely applicable. In addition to first aid, you will learn, for example, how to extinguish a fire and evacuate a building safely. This makes you an important link in emergency situations. Whether you supervise an evacuation and take colleagues to a safe place or provide first aid in the event of a fall; you know what needs to be done.
Here are three reasons why an emergency response course is valuable:
- You learn to act with more self-confidence, even in tense moments.
- You know what to do in emergency situations, both at work and in your private life.
- With these practical skills you can prevent (major) accidents.
