But Harry and Meghan are now coming back to the UK soon, taking their son Archie and daughter Lilibet with them. They are doing so for Queen Elizabeth’s 70th anniversary to the throne in June. A representative of the pair confirmed that on Friday.
Until now, Queen Elizabeth only saw little Lilibet via video calls and in countless photos sent from California to the British royal family. In her unusually emotional New Year’s speech, Queen Elizabeth pointed out that it was certainly not an easy year for her, including the loss of Prince Philip and various health problems, but a bright spot was the arrival of four new great-grandchildren. Lilibet is one of them, although the two have never seen each other offline.
Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson says the couple are “honoured to attend the celebration with their children in June.
No balcony scene
A salient detail is that Harry will not be seen during the balcony scene at Buckingham Palace. Only family members who perform official duties alongside the queen are allowed to wave to the audience. Harry gave up his royal duties and lost his patronage after moving to Los Angeles with Meghan in 2020.
Strong criticism
We will also not see Prince Andrew appear on the balcony in June.
Andrew was discredited in 2019 when American Virginia Giuffre claimed that the Duke of York abused her years ago when she was still a minor. He recently lost his official status within the royal family after a settlement was reached.
The fallen prince recently came under heavy criticism for escorting his mother to her place in full view of all the cameras during Prince Philip’s memorial service at Westminster Abbey.
